Frequently asked questions

  • Does Gov Rewind change government websites?
No. Gov Rewind never edits or alters official pages. It only helps you open archived copies in a new tab or redirect your browser to those archived versions when you choose that option.
  • Is this an official government tool?
No. Gov Rewind is an independent project by Jessica Hartmann. It simply makes it easier to reach archived copies provided by official archive sites and web archives.
  • Does Gov Rewind work on every .gov page?
Not every page. Gov Rewind includes lists of many known pages and tries to match others based on their URLs and titles. When there is no good match, it can still help you reach an archived homepage or search for older versions of the page.
  • Will I still be able to see the current version of a page?
Yes. You can set Gov Rewind to show a banner instead of redirecting, so you stay on the live page and choose whether to open the archived copy. You can also disable Gov Rewind on specific sites at any time.
  • Does Gov Rewind send my browsing history anywhere?
No. The extension’s matching happens inside your browser using local text lists and your settings. When you click a button to open an archive or search, your browser simply navigates there like it would for any other link.
  • Which browsers are supported?
Gov Rewind is a desktop-only extension and is designed for Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and most Chromium-based browsers that can install from the Chrome Web Store (such as Brave and Vivaldi). Firefox support is planned. Safari and mobile browsers are not currently supported.

What Gov Rewind does

Gov Rewind helps you see earlier versions of many U.S. government (.gov) pages. When you visit a supported site, it looks for an archived copy and offers to send you there.

  • Quickly open earlier versions of selected White House, State, EPA, CDC, and other .gov pages.
  • Choose whether matching pages automatically redirect or simply show a gentle “View archived copy” banner.
  • The toolbar icon changes color so you can tell at a glance if you’re on live content, an archive, or if no match was found.
  • Even when there’s no direct match, Gov Rewind can still help you reach an archived homepage or search for older versions.
